Today was spent lounging around the house until it was time to leave for the Kacey Musgraves show.
Getting to the venue about three hours ahead of schedule, we found a place to park (ordeal), and took off walking. It’d been years since I’d wandered the streets of KC, and I don’t believe that particular part of town was ever included in those wanders, so it was just a tad exciting.
We meandered down the neighborhood, and located a nice little record store (Josey Records), which offered many rarely seen records from Jesse Winchester, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Woody Guthrie. Not a bad find.
After the record store, Rob and I headed back toward the venue (Arvest Bank Theatre at The Midland in KC), looking for something to eat.
I remember being a little fellow in KC, and freaking out about a certain building that had color-changing lights set up all around. I never did know for sure what the building housed, and I still don’t. I think that’s part of the appeal, so I’m just going to leave it that way.
We found a wonderful restaurant (with more beer selections than I can possibly fathom) awesomely named “Flying Saucer” (101 E 13th St. KC, MO)…It was damn delicious, and reasonably priced. I strongly recommend it, if you ever find yourself in need of a sustenance in KC, MO.
Once we made it back to, and into the venue, we found our seats and prepared to see the Cactus Blossoms. Only, the Cactus Blossoms never came on. Instead, we got John and Jacob. They were also talented individuals, but a heads up would have been nice. I hope I get the chance to see CB in the near future, as their album “You’re Dreaming” really is fantastic.
Kacey Musgraves puts on a good show. Very eccentric, and unique. Half way through, they stopped playing, and had a talent show with the band members (juggling, balloon animals, ping pong ball toss, etc.) She played all of the songs you’d expect she would from her latest album, with selected tracks from her first. She ended the encore by bringing a piñata onstage, bashing it to oblivion (on beat) and tossing the candy into the crowd.

A fantastic night was had by us. The Midland is a beautiful place, but I strongly recommend they revamp their seating arrangement. At least put numbers on the back of the chairs, please.
